Leaders of far-right parties in Europe gathered in Madrid on Saturday, praising Donald Trump’s return to power. The event, called “Make Europe Great Again,” was attended by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Italian Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini, among others.
The summit, organized by the Patriots for Europe party, featured speakers who criticized immigration and called for a new “Reconquista” – a medieval re-conquest of Muslim-controlled parts of the Iberian Peninsula. The term was also used to describe left-leaning views on race, gender, and sexuality as “wokism.”
The event was notable for its exclusion of several key European nationalist parties, including Italy’s Brothers of Italy and Poland’s Law and Justice. Despite this, the gathering attracted a large crowd of around 2,000 supporters, many of whom waved Spanish flags.
Trump’s influence was a dominant theme at the summit, with Orban saying that Trump has “changed the world in just a few weeks” and made far-right groups more mainstream. The event was seen as an attempt to rally support for the Patriots party, which is part of the European Parliament’s third-largest voting bloc.
