Far-Right Surge Sweeps Portugal with Chega Party’s Rise

Portugal’s anti-immigration Chega party has made significant gains, becoming the main opposition in parliament and shattering the country’s traditional party system. With 60 seats out of 230, Chega will lead the parliamentary opposition to the new government. This marks a turning point for Portugal, as it joins Europe’s growing far-right movement. Chega’s leader, Andre Ventura, hailed the result as “a profound change in the Portuguese political system.”

The party’s surge coincides with gains by other far-right forces across Europe, including France’s National Rally and Alternative for Germany. Chega’s hardline stance on immigration and its ability to challenge traditional parties have contributed to its success. The May 18th election was Portugal’s third in as many years, leaving the country with a fragmented political landscape.

As the new government faces an emboldened far-right competitor, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro is expected to form another minority government. Chega’s nationalist platform and “Save Portugal” slogan have resonated with voters, positioning it as a major force in Portuguese politics.
