This January marks Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and local doctors in Fargo are urging women to prioritize screenings. According to experts, HPV (Human Papillomavirus) causes up to 90% of cervical cancer cases.
However, the HPV vaccine series and safe sex practices can significantly reduce this risk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend starting the two-dose HPV vaccine between ages 9 and 14. For those over 14 and under 45, a three-dose series is recommended.
In addition to vaccinations, regular pap smears are crucial in detecting cervical cancer. Dr. Michaela Heller of Essentia Health advises starting pap smears at age 21. For women under 30, routine testing may not be necessary unless an abnormal cytology or pap smear result is found.
Early detection and prevention can lead to better health outcomes. The HPV vaccine also offers protection against other cancers, including oral and throat cancer.
