Italian fashion designer Rosita Missoni has died aged 93, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most iconic figures in the industry. She co-founded the eponymous knitwear brand with her husband Ottavio in 1953 and became renowned for her colourful designs that brought Italian ready-to-wear to a global market.
Born in 1931, Missoni met her future partner while studying English in London. The couple married in 1953 and established their fashion house in Gallarate, Italy. They gained fame with their signature zig-zag motif and kaleidoscopic prints that became synonymous with the Italian dolce vita lifestyle.
The brand was heavily influenced by Missoni’s childhood fascination with hand-knotted textiles, which she learned from her grandparents. Her family played a significant role in the business, with her children Vittorio, Luca, and Angela, and grandchildren contributing to its success.
Missoni continued to work on the brand until 2018 when it was sold to Fondo Strategico Italiano. She remained an influential tastemaker, regularly sharing her home with interior magazines. Missoni is survived by her son Luca, daughter Angela, nine grandchildren, and their families.
