The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced the official launch of faster Qi2 25W wireless charging, with several hundred devices already certified. This faster standard will support not only iPhones but also “major” Android smartphones.
Qi2 25W is a significant improvement over the prior 15W limit and offers nearly 70% more power. The WPC has confirmed that iPhones will support Qi2 25W, although no specific models have been mentioned. It’s likely that future iPhone models will also receive this update, given the connection between Qi2 and Apple’s MagSafe technology.
Android smartphones are set to join the Qi2 ecosystem for the first time with this launch. However, it remains unclear whether they will be fully compatible with Qi2 25W or just offer partial support like Samsung flagships currently do. The WPC has not commented on this yet.
The announcement comes after accessory brands secured early certification and announced their own Qi2-enabled products. Fady Mishriki, chair of the WPC’s board of directors, welcomed the progress in the Qi standard’s evolution, stating that consumers will be delighted by the increased power and device diversity.
