Faster wireless charging is coming to iPhones and some major Android smartphones, thanks to the new Qi2 25W standard. This upgrade provides a 66% increase in power delivery compared to the previous Qi2 platform. The faster charging speed will encourage more people to use wireless charging, making it a game-changer for the technology.
Newer iPhones already support Qi2, but this is a significant development for Android phones, which have mostly never used Qi2-certified devices. However, some Android phones can integrate Qi2 charging with a magnetic case. The adoption of Qi2 25W expands beyond smartphones to include power banks and chargers, which were certified earlier.
The Wireless Power Consortium expects “several hundred” devices to be tested and certified soon. While the exact Android phones that will support Qi2 25W are not yet known, this new standard is a major step forward for wireless charging technology.
