FasTrak Toll Scam Text Messages Target California Drivers

Millions of Americans are at risk of being scammed due to fraudulent text messages claiming they owe unpaid tolls through California’s electronic toll collection system, FasTrak. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates billions of dollars lost each year from such scams.

The latest scam targets drivers by demanding payment for allegedly unpaid tolls or “FastTrack” fees. Scammers create a false sense of urgency, warning of fines or license suspension if not paid promptly. However, clicking on the provided link can lead to identity theft and loss of personal details, including bank account information.

Experts advise recipients to immediately report the messages as junk and block the number. They can also report the message to the FTC or notify their phone carrier for extra protection.

To avoid falling victim, experts recommend verifying account status through the official FasTrak website and not clicking on links from unknown sources. Instead, visit the official toll service website to check for any unpaid bills. Scammers often use tactics like creating a sense of urgency or fear to get people to act quickly without thinking.

The FTC reported $8.8 billion in losses from such scams in 2022 alone. By being cautious and taking steps to protect personal information, drivers can help prevent falling victim to these toll scams.
