FBCS Data Breach Affects 4.2 Million People in the US

FBCS announced on July 26, 2024, that the number of people affected by its February data breach has risen to 4.2 million in the US. The debt collection agency collects debts from various sectors including consumer credit, healthcare, commercial, student loans, and utilities. Initially, FBCS reported that approximately 1.9 million individuals had their sensitive personal information compromised. In May, this number was increased to 3.2 million, and now 4.253,394 people are impacted.

Exposed data may include full name, Social Security Number (SSN), date of birth, account information, driver’s license number or ID card, and more. Notifications have been sent out to the newly affected individuals, warning them of heightened phishing and fraud risks. They will also receive instructions on enrolling in a free 24-month credit monitoring and identity restoration service via CyEx.

No specific details about the attack type or responsible party have been disclosed. The data breach notification states that unauthorized access to FBCS’s internal network was detected on February 26, 2024. People affected by the breach are urged to be cautious of phishing attempts and monitor their credit reports for fraudulent activities.
