FBI agents are bracing themselves for potential mass firings as the Justice Department demands they fill out questionnaires about their involvement in investigating the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot. The move has been met with significant pushback, including warnings of lawsuits and threats of doxing.
The FBI Agents Association has urged its members not to resign or offer to resign, warning that any voluntary departure could be seen as non-compliance. Lawyers for prosecutors and agents have also called the possible dismissal of employees who worked on Trump-related investigations a “violation of due process rights,” threatening legal action if names are made public.
The Justice Department’s actions come after the firing of over a dozen officials who worked on federal criminal investigations into former President Donald Trump. The department has instructed FBI leaders to provide information about all current and former employees who worked on January 6 investigations by Tuesday.
Trump issued a blanket pardon to those arrested and convicted for their roles in the violent US Capitol riot on his first day in office. The move has sparked outrage, with many fearing that the Justice Department’s actions are aimed at targeting specific individuals.
