The FBI responded to a Freedom of Information Act request from tech entrepreneur Dave Troy about the enigmatic creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. The agency stated that Satoshi could be one or more individuals but cannot confirm or deny their existence. Troy plans to appeal and potentially gain information about Satoshi’s identity, which could help establish who they are.
Satoshi’s true identity has been a mystery since 2014, with multiple self-proclaimed candidates emerging. Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is the most prominent example. The lack of knowledge has led to various conspiracy theories, including some suggesting the Central Intelligence Agency is involved.
Hal Finney is often considered a plausible Satoshi candidate due to receiving the first-ever Bitcoin transaction. However, Casa cofounder Jameson Lopp presented evidence showing Finney was unlikely to be Satoshi.
Meanwhile, Satoshi’s place as the biggest Bitcoin holder is being challenged. According to Eric Balchunas, BlackRock’s IBIT could surpass Satoshi’s holdings next year based on current inflows. The combined holdings of US Bitcoin ETFs are already close to surpassing those of Satoshi.
