The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have issued a warning to Gmail, Outlook, and other popular email service users about the Medusa ransomware threat. The ransomware variant has impacted over 300 victims across various fields, including medical, education, legal, insurance, tech, and manufacturing.
Developed by a group of developers, Spearwing, the Medusa ransomware uses phishing campaigns, exploited software vulnerabilities, and common tactics to breach data. Victims are demanded ransoms ranging from $100,000 to $15 million. The FBI and CISA recommend protecting users by:
– Developing a recovery plan for sensitive data
– Requiring password logins with frequent changes
– Enforcing multifactor authentication
– Keeping operating systems, software, and firmware up to date
– Segmenting networks to prevent ransomware spread
Symantec has identified Spearwing as the group behind the Medusa ransomware attacks. The group threatens to publish stolen data on their website if victims refuse to pay the ransom. To protect against this threat, users must prioritize cybersecurity measures and stay vigilant.
