FBI Warns iPhone Users to Use Encrypted Messaging and Calls Due to China Hack

The FBI, alongside CISA, has issued a warning to iPhone and Android users to use encrypted messaging and calls where available. This comes after a significant US telco network hacking campaign attributed to China’s Salt Typhoon group. The hackers have stolen metadata on who individuals were communicating with, but voice and text content remains largely untouched.

The unexpected move from law enforcement may seem surprising, given past issues with end-to-end encryption limiting their access to user content. However, the FBI referred to “responsibly managed encryption,” implying some form of lawful access. The key advice is to avoid basic network text messaging, including RCS, which leaves messages vulnerable to interception.

This warning applies to both messaging and calls. Using secure platforms like WhatsApp or Signal can resolve this issue. While rare in the US, secure calling is common practice in Asia and Africa due to network distrust. Apple’s upcoming iOS 18.2 update will allow iPhone users to change their default messaging and calling apps, enabling them to use alternative platforms.

Experts recommend changing settings for both messages and calls as soon as iOS 18.2 is released. Using WhatsApp or Signal for messaging and calling can provide adequate security. It’s essential to note that this risk is relatively low unless you’re in a sensitive or high-risk position.
