The FBI has issued a warning to smartphone users about the growing threat of artificial intelligence (AI) in scams. With AI, scammers can easily clone voices and make convincing phone calls or videos that sound like loved ones, demanding money. To protect themselves, Americans are advised to create a secret word with their family members.
According to the FBI, public service alert number I-120324-PSA has been issued to warn of cyber attackers using generative AI to commit large-scale fraud and increase the believability of their schemes. If you receive a suspicious phone call, follow these steps:
1. Hang up the phone to verify the caller’s identity by researching online.
2. Create a secret word or phrase known only to your family and contacts.
3. Never share sensitive information with people you’ve met online or over the phone.
Once you have your unique family secret word, practice it with everyone in the home so you can quickly verify its authenticity in case of an emergency call. By taking these steps, you can protect yourself from AI-generated scams.
