A US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) commissioner has accused Vice President Kamala Harris of violating the “equal time” rule by appearing on Saturday Night Live (SNL). The commission’s equal time rule requires licensed broadcasters to provide equal airtime to rival candidates.
FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr stated that Harris’s appearance, which included a cold open sketch with comedian Maya Rudolph, was a clear attempt to evade this rule. Carr believes the rule is meant to prevent biased and partisan conduct on public airwaves.
However, SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels said in an interview two months ago that he would not book main candidates like Harris or Trump during the election cycle due to equal time provisions.
The FCC has not made any official decision regarding this matter, and neither NBC nor the Harris campaign has commented on the claim.
