The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ordered an investigation into Comcast’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs under Chairman Brendan Carr. The inquiry is the latest in a series of regulatory actions by the agency, aimed at media companies.
Chairman Carr has expressed concerns that Comcast may be promoting invidious forms of discrimination. The FCC will examine D.E.I. practices at Comcast, which regulates various sectors including cable and high-speed internet. This investigation marks a departure from other recent inquiries, which focused on corporate sponsorships or “news distortion” complaints.
Former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler criticized the agency’s actions as being driven by President Trump’s political agenda. Anna Gomez, a Democratic commissioner, cautioned against fostering partisan culture wars and emphasized the need to focus on core missions such as closing the digital divide and protecting consumers.
Comcast has confirmed receiving the inquiry and expressed willingness to cooperate with the FCC’s questions. The investigation is part of Carr’s broader efforts to scrutinize media companies under his leadership.
