FDA Authorizes Sale of Zyn Nicotine Pouches Despite Controversy

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the sale of Zyn nicotine pouches, following an extensive scientific review. The decision comes after Sen. Chuck Schumer’s accusations that the brand markets to children.

Zyn faced scrutiny from lawmakers in 2024, with Schumer requesting an investigation into marketing practices. However, the FDA says its review found the product meets public health standards outlined in the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

The agency notes that Zyn benefits adults who use cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products by helping them switch to these alternatives entirely. The FDA will remain vigilant to prevent Zyn-like products from advertising to underage consumers.

Lawmakers Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) and others have welcomed the move, with some even taking to social media to express their support for the product.
