The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has increased the recall of eggs sold at Costco locations due to salmonella exposure. The recalled eggs are linked to Handsome Brook Farms Kirkland brand 24-Count Eggs, distributed in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Approximately 10,800 retail units were distributed to 25 stores starting November 22. Initially recalled on November 27, the FDA reclassified the product to a Class 1 alert level on December 20, citing a “reasonable probability” of causing serious health consequences or death.
Consumers should not consume these eggs and can return them to Costco for a full refund or dispose of them. The affected eggs have a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 9661910680 with a use-by date of January 5, 2025.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include severe stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, and loss of appetite. In some cases, particularly in children under 5, adults over 65, or those with weakened immune systems, the illness can be more severe, requiring medical treatment or hospitalization.
