Federal Judge Weighs Releasing Hundreds Arrested in Immigration “Blitz”

A US federal judge is considering releasing hundreds of people arrested by federal agents during an immigration crackdown in Chicago. The National Immigrant Justice Center claims that many of these arrests were made without a warrant, violating a consent decree in Illinois and neighboring states. If the judge rules in favor of the center’s request, it could allow those arrested to be released on interim alternatives to detention. This includes ankle monitor programs or virtual check-in appointments with immigration agents via mobile apps. The decision comes after a recent ruling found that federal agents had violated a similar consent decree over warrantless arrests in the Chicago area.
