The US government has filed two lawsuits to reclaim millions of dollars in cryptocurrency stolen by North Korea’s notorious Lazarus Group. The group, suspected of stealing a significant portion of the funds from several virtual currency exchanges and transactions.
According to court documents, the Lazarus Group is believed to have stolen approximately $28 million from Deribit in 2022. Although they laundered the funds through various mixers and bridges, law enforcement was able to recover around $1.7 million worth of Tether in five frozen wallets.
In a separate incident, the group allegedly stole $41 million from Stake.com, an online casino and gambling site. The stolen funds were transferred through virtual currency bridges, Bitcoin addresses, and mixers before being consolidated and deposited at different exchanges.
The FBI has linked several recent cryptocurrency heists to North Korean military hacking groups, including the Lazarus Group and APT38. These groups have been accused of engaging in cyber attacks, intrusions, and attempted intrusions into computers and networks since 2014. The US government is seeking reimbursement for these stolen funds, with estimates suggesting that the total amount could be significantly higher than the $2.67 million initially reported.
