FGF Brands Recalls Donuts Due to Listeria Contamination

FGF Brands has issued a nationwide recall of 60 of its donut products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can be fatal to young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. The recalled products were distributed across the US and Canada.

The FDA classified the recall as Class II, indicating temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences for users who consume the affected products. Listeria infection, also known as listeriosis, usually causes symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headaches, diarrhea, and vomiting that should pass within a few days.

However, pregnant people are at risk of serious complications like pregnancy loss, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in their newborns. According to the CDC, listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the US, causing 1,600 infections and 260 deaths each year.

The recall started on January 7, and the FDA gave it a Class II classification on February 5. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that listeria is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality due to foodborne illness.

FGF Brands has not commented on this story as no one was available outside of regular working hours.
