Fifth Ave Celebrates 200 Years with Block Party

Fifth Avenue will celebrate its 200th anniversary on Sunday with a grand block party, closing streets between 48th and 55th Streets from noon to 6 p.m. The event, titled “You’ve Arrived on Fifth: 200 Years of Icons and Dreams,” features live performances, interactive art installations, exclusive shopping experiences, and a ceremonial cake cutting.

Iconic retailers such as Aritzia, Assouline, Canada Goose, Coach, and Tiffany & Co. will participate in the celebration. The event is rain or shine, transforming Fifth Avenue into a festive pedestrian haven.

This 200-year milestone marks a significant shift in plans for Fifth Avenue, which aims to become a pedestrian-friendly boulevard with doubled sidewalk space, reduced traffic lanes, and added seating areas. The estimated $350 million redesign will be funded through public and private investments.

The completion of the super-tall skyscraper at 520 Fifth Avenue is also set to change the street’s skyline, making it the second-tallest building on the avenue after the Empire State Building.

Madelyn Wils, interim president of the Fifth Avenue Association, described the design as a “visionary” transformation that will turn overcrowded streets into a green corridor. The celebration this Sunday offers a glimpse into Fifth Avenue’s rich history and its look ahead to an exciting future.
