Fifth Death Confirmed in NYC Legionnaires’ Outbreak

A fifth person has died from Legionnaires’ disease, an outbreak that has sickened dozens in New York City. The bacteria was found in 12 cooling towers across 10 buildings, including a hospital and a sexual health clinic. Remediation efforts have been completed on all affected towers.

Legionnaires’ disease causes pneumonia by spreading through building water systems. Symptoms include coughing, fever, headaches, muscle aches, and shortness of breath, which develop two to two weeks after exposure. The city urges people in the affected area to seek medical attention if they experience flu-like symptoms.
