Film Independent president Josh Welsh, who died on December 31 after a five-year battle with colon cancer, was a tireless champion of independent voices in the film industry. He started out as an actor and began volunteering at the Film Independent Spirit Awards in 1996 before joining the organization’s staff over two decades ago.
Welsh led Film Independent for over a decade, growing the organization’s staff, budget, programming slate, and membership under his leadership. During his tenure, he deepened partnerships with studios, NGOs, and governments, expanded the organization’s international reach, and promoted diversity in the film industry.
As president, Welsh was also responsible for planning and implementing Film Independent’s Artist Development programs for over a decade before becoming president. He earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in philosophy from Kenyon College.
Welsh is survived by his wife Bonnie Gavel and daughter Isla Welsh, who will benefit from a GoFundMe established to support her education. Tributes poured in on social media from filmmakers including Barry Jenkins, Sian Heder, James Ponsoldt, and Jeremy Podeswa, praising Welsh’s kindness, selflessness, and dedication to advocating for filmmakers and artists.
“We are devastated by the loss of Josh Welsh,” said Film Independent Board Chair Brenda Robinson. “Josh was a tireless champion of independent voices, a trusted arts leader, and a cherished colleague and friend.” The organization will continue to honor his legacy by continuing to build on the foundation he established.
