Brady Corbet, director of Oscar-nominated film “The Brutalist,” has spoken out about the realities of making a successful film on a tight budget. In an interview with Marc Maron’s podcast, Corbet revealed that he and his wife, Mona Fastvold, made zero dollars on their last two films, including “The Brutalist” and “Vox Lux.” This is not an isolated case, as Corbet shared that many filmmakers struggle to pay rent due to the lack of financial support.
Corbet explained that filmmakers are often expected to promote their films, which can limit their availability for other work and income opportunities. He also highlighted that the promotion schedule can be a major obstacle for filmmakers, who may go months without seeing any significant revenue from their film’s release.
The 2025 Academy Awards have nominated “The Brutalist” for several awards, including best picture, best leading actor for Adrien Brody’s portrayal of László Tóth, and numerous other categories. Despite the nominations, many filmmakers struggle to make ends meet due to the financial constraints of making a film.
“I’m grateful to have made a movie that speaks to the immense tragedy of a time in history,” Brody said in an interview with Variety. “And for it to be told with very little sentimentality, as almost a visual reference of a time that cannot be forgotten and a pervasive undercurrent that cannot be ignored.”
