Finland has recovered an anchor thought to be from a ship suspected of damaging underwater cables in the Baltic Sea. Investigators believe that power and internet lines were affected by the anchor, which was removed after being held by customs officials.
The authorities suspect that the ship is part of Russia’s “shadow fleet”, a term used to describe privately owned vessels that allegedly carry oil cargo for Russian state-owned companies. A lawyer has argued that Finland lacks jurisdiction in the case, as the incident occurred outside its territorial waters.
Baltic Sea nations have been placed on high alert due to concerns about sabotage targeting underwater infrastructure. The recovery of the anchor marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the damage to the cables.
