Finland Seeks Seizure of Russian Oil Tanker Eagle S

Finland’s national power grid operator Fingrid has asked a Helsinki court to seize the Russian oil tanker Eagle S, which is suspected of causing damage to its undersea Estlink 2 electricity interconnector. The cable between Finland and Estonia was damaged on December 25 along with four telecoms lines.

Fingrid claims the tanker dragged its anchor along the seabed, causing the outage. The company expects the cable to return to service in August this year. A lawyer for the ship’s owner, Caravella LLC FZ, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The seizure is part of Fingrid’s efforts to secure compensation for the damage. Finland’s customs service has impounded the tanker’s cargo, citing concerns it may be part of a shadow fleet used to circumvent sanctions on Russian oil. Moscow has denied involvement in the matter.
