Firefox Introduces Smart Suggestions in Address Bar

Firefox is taking its search suggestions game to the next level. In an effort to “skip the search” page, Mozilla has introduced smart suggestions that provide direct answers and results right in the address bar. The feature uses a new protocol called Oblivious HTTP, which protects user privacy while still allowing for relevant searches.

With this update, users can type in common abbreviations or phrases and receive instant responses, such as flight status updates or links to local businesses. This move aims to simplify the search experience and reduce the need to visit external websites.

However, Mozilla also acknowledges that ads may appear in these suggestions, but thanks to the Oblivious HTTP system, neither Mozilla nor the sponsor can track who is seeing the result.

As with any new feature, users will have the option to turn it off. To disable the feature, users can uncheck “Retrieve suggestions as you type” in the Search settings or set browser.urlbar.quicksuggest.online.enabled to false in the about:config page.
