First-Ever Lunar Eclipse Captured by US Lander

A Blue Ghost lunar lander, operated by Firefly Aerospace from Texas, captured a rare glimpse of an eclipse from space. The spacecraft was stationed on the moon’s Earth-facing side and witnessed the total lunar eclipse between Thursday night and Friday morning.

From Earth, the eclipse appeared as a red moon, but from the lunar surface, it resembled a total solar eclipse, with the moon’s shadow blocking the sun above the horizon. This phenomenon is known as a total solar eclipse, which was recently visible in April 2024.

The Blue Ghost lander followed in the footsteps of NASA’s Surveyor 3 mission, which observed a solar eclipse from the lunar surface in 1967. Few humans have witnessed a solar eclipse from outer space. The spacecraft launched on January 15 from Florida and is expected to continue operations through Sunday, testing the lunar environment for NASA.

Firefly Aerospace’s achievement marks a first for an American commercial company, and its images of the eclipse provide valuable insights into the phenomenon.
