First Human Case of Avian Flu in Iowa Confirmed

A person in northwest Iowa has been confirmed to have contracted avian influenza, making them the first human case in the state. The individual was exposed to infected poultry while working with a commercial flock and is currently receiving treatment for mild symptoms.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this is part of 64 confirmed cases across nine states. However, there has been no evidence of transmission between humans or from animals to humans.

Iowa Department of Health and Human Services officials say most exposures are linked to infected poultry or dairy cows. The state’s preparedness efforts, including strong partnerships and effective tools, will help mitigate the impact on the community.

There is no concern about egg safety, poultry products, or pasteurized milk and dairy products. Iowa has closely monitored the spread of avian influenza since its detection in 2022 and is ready to handle any potential outbreaks.
