A measles case has been confirmed in Oakland County, Michigan. The infected adult had recent overseas travel and their vaccination status is unknown. This is the first confirmed case of measles in Michigan this year and the first case since July 2024.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads through direct person-to-person contact and the air. MDHHS recommends unvaccinated individuals ages 1 year and older receive the MMR vaccine to protect themselves and those around them.
The infected individual visited Kruse & Muer on Main, Henry Ford Rochester Hospital Emergency Department, and other locations between March 3-10. If you think you were exposed, Immune Globulin (Ig) treatment is effective within six days of exposure for high-risk individuals.
Symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body. The MMR vaccine is available at various health centers and pharmacies in Oakland County.
Residents are urged to check their vaccination status and get vaccinated if needed. If you think you were exposed or have symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
