First Measles-Related Death in US in Decade Reported Amid Outbreak

A child has died due to measles, marking the first such death in the US in a decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Washington state health officials are urging residents to stay vigilant about vaccinations amid concerns over the spread of the disease.

Six confirmed measles cases have been reported in Washington this year, with two more exposures. However, none of those exposed developed the disease due to prior immunity from vaccination. The CDC reports that 91.3% of children in Washington state were vaccinated against measles last school year.

Parents are weighing the risks and benefits of vaccination. While some see it as a low-risk high-reward measure for eye health, others express skepticism about vaccine effectiveness. Health officials emphasize that vaccination remains the best protection, and encourage parents to get their children vaccinated with two doses of MMR, if eligible.

The measles outbreak is also affecting young children who are at risk of severe disease. Public Health – Seattle & King County reports that 87% of 2-year-olds in King County have received one dose of MMR vaccine, and 72% of 4-6 year olds have received two or more doses. Parents should prioritize getting their children vaccinated as soon as possible.
