A chance capture by a doorbell camera has provided the world’s first audio and video recording of a meteorite impact. The unusual incident occurred last July in Prince Edward Island, Canada, when homeowner Joe Velaidum noticed a chalky mark on his front walkway. Shortly after, University of Alberta meteorite collection curator Chris Herd received a call to investigate.
The Charlottetown Meteorite, weighing around 95 grams, was found at the site, and analysis revealed it was an ordinary chondrite, the most common type of stony meteorite on Earth. The meteorite is believed to have entered Earth’s atmosphere at terminal velocity before landing in the nearby community of Marshfield.
“It’s actually the first and only meteorite ever found on the Island, and what a way to make that discovery,” Herd said. This rare occurrence provides scientists with new samples from space, originating from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
