Authorities in southeastern Kenya have recovered five bodies from shallow graves at a site suspected to be linked to the deaths of hundreds of members of a doomsday cult two years ago. According to Government pathologist Dr Richard Njoroge, excavations are ongoing and more remains are expected to be found.
The discovery comes after authorities initially identified 27 suspected graves, with six exhumed and five bodies recovered so far. The remaining areas have yielded scattered body parts, sparking further investigations. At least 11 suspects are being looked into in connection with the deaths, which may have resulted from “starved and suffocated” victims due to extreme religious ideologies.
The incident has raised concerns over potential foul play involving several missing children in the area, leading to an ongoing investigation by Kenya’s Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. In 2023, more than 400 bodies were exhumed from a nearby forest linked to another cult-related incident, making this case one of the world’s largest in recent history.
