College baseball’s unpredictable start to the season has taken its toll, with five top-25 teams experiencing losses on Opening Day. Virginia, ranked fifth, fell to unranked Michigan in Puerto Rico with a 5-4 loss in 11 innings.
The Cavaliers’ loss marks the second time in three years that a top-five team dropped their season opener. Jay Woolfolk’s outing was marred by his inability to control runs, while Mitch Voit and Colby Tuner led the Wolverines’ scoring efforts.
Other ranked teams also suffered defeats on Friday. Duke, ranked tenth, lost 8-3 to unranked Cincinnati after allowing a bases-loaded walk in the third inning. Ole Miss, ranked twenty-second, beat unranked Arizona with a 2-1 victory in a pitcher’s duel.
Kentucky, ranked twentieth, struggled against Lipscomb, losing 3-1 in a doubleheader. The Wildcats’ bats remained silent, while Lipscomb’s Rigo Ramos delivered five scoreless innings to secure his first win of the season.
Lastly, UNLV defeated unranked Indiana with a 4-2 victory, thanks in part to Carson Lane’s strong outing and limiting relief work from Mason Dillow.
