Rescuers have discovered the bodies of five skiers near Switzerland’s luxury resort Zermatt in the Valais Alps. The victims were found on Sunday, a day after emergency services were alerted to unattended ski equipment left behind by climbers ascending the 4,199-metre Rimpfischhorn peak.
The search for the skiers began after a group of climbers reported several pairs of abandoned skis near the summit. Aerial and ground searches led to the discovery of the bodies on the Adler Glacier at varying altitudes.
Three bodies were located in one area, while two more were found higher up on a narrow patch of snow. Rescue service Air Zermatt confirmed that the group had been traveling as a party of five.
An investigation into the circumstances of the accident has been launched by the public prosecutor’s office. The incident highlights the risks associated with advanced climbs and overnight excursions in high-altitude areas.
Zermatt is a popular destination for affluent skiers, but the climb to Rimpfischhorn requires an experienced team and a significant amount of time. The area is prone to challenging mountain rescues due to its remote location and unpredictable weather conditions.
