Flanagan Talks Dark Tower Adaptation with Stephen King

Mike Flanagan has offered an update on his adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling novels for television, including two standalone films set within the universe. The project, which has been in development for some time, is still moving forward despite Flanagan’s recent work on other projects.

In a profile interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Flanagan shared what keeps him coming back to King’s works. “Stephen King was one of the first authors that I encountered, and I learned the hard way that it’s much scarier on the page,” he explained. “He’s always been my hero as a writer.”

The Dark Tower adaptation has faced some delays due to logistical and legal issues, but Flanagan reassured fans that progress is being made. “It seems to be moving on its own momentum. There’s so much logistical, boring, legal stuff that we have to kind of machete our way through to get that thing moving,” he said.

Flanagan also shared his vision for the adaptation, which includes a TV series with at least five seasons and potentially some standalone films within the universe. “We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point – you don’t know,” he explained.

The author himself has been involved in the project, having given Flanagan permission to adapt his work after receiving a detailed outline of the plan. “He’s very, very supportive and very excited about what we’d like to do with it,” Flanagan said.
