Flesh-Eating Bacteria Found in Massachusetts Beach Waters

A confirmed case of Vibrio vulnificus infection has been reported in Falmouth, Massachusetts, according to local and state health officials. The investigation centers around a swimmer who had an open wound exposed while swimming at Old Silver Beach.

The rare bacteria causes flesh-eating infections and is typically contracted through swimming with open wounds or consuming raw seafood. Health experts emphasize the importance of taking precautions when engaging in water activities with compromised skin.

Barnstable County’s disease case investigators are leading the inquiry, which aims to determine how the individual came into contact with the bacteria.
