At least four people in Florida have died from contracting Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria typically found in warm saltwater or brackish water. The state has reported 11 cases this year, which is fewer than the usual 150-200 cases annually. However, the consequences of Vibrio vulnificus infections can be severe, leading to necrotizing fasciitis and requiring intensive care or limb amputation in many cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in five people who contract an infection from this bacteria may die within a short period of time.
