Flesh-Eating Bacteria Spur Outbreak in Louisiana Waters

A rare but deadly flesh-eating bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus, is causing an outbreak in warm coastal waters of Louisiana, claiming four lives so far this year. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, 17 people have gotten sick from the bacteria, which thrives in warm saltwater.

The bacteria can cause severe infections, particularly in those with open cuts or weakened immune systems. Health officials warn that the warmer the water, the higher the risk of infection. The peak season for Vibrio vulnificus is between May and October, when temperatures are above 68 degrees.

Most cases involve people with open wounds who come into contact with warm water. Eating raw or undercooked seafood, especially oysters, can also lead to infection. Symptoms include skin infections near cuts or wounds, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Those with pre-existing health conditions like liver disease or a weak immune system are more susceptible to serious illness. Health officials recommend washing any open cuts with soap and clean water immediately, avoiding salt or brackish water, and seeking medical attention if symptoms arise after being in the water or eating seafood.
