Flexbar: Touch Bar Clone for PC and Mac Laptops

A startup called ENIAC has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a device called the Flexbar, which aims to offer users more customization options than Apple’s original Touch Bar. The Flexbar is a 10-inch, high-resolution touchscreen controller that can be positioned above the keyboard or anywhere else to provide context-dependent shortcuts for apps running on your computer.

The idea behind the Flexbar is to address some of the shortcomings of Apple’s Touch Bar, such as lack of tactile feedback and frequent need to look at the display. The Flexbar offers haptic feedback and can work with Macs, Windows PCs, Android devices, and tablets. However, software support is still in development.

The device features a 2170 x 60 pixel AMOLED touchscreen display and comes with preloaded shortcuts for popular programs. ENIAC hopes to encourage third-party developers to create additional controls through its “Plugin system and Marketplace” expected to launch in 2025. Backers can reserve the Flexbar for $119 or more, but crowdfunding campaigns often carry risks of delay or non-delivery.

The Flexbar is designed to be compatible with desktop keyboards, where it may prove most useful. However, concerns about its potential compatibility with laptops and the availability of pre-existing displays have raised questions. The device’s price and software limitations also raise questions about its viability in the market.
