FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta still has “absolute confidence” in his head coach Hansi Flick, despite the team’s third consecutive La Liga home defeat against Atletico Madrid. The Blaugrana were level on points with their rivals at the summit of the Spanish top flight table but suffered a chastening 2-1 loss after going 1-0 up.
Coach Flick praised his team’s performance, saying it was “unbelievable how we play” and that he is proud of the way they approached the match. However, he acknowledged that his team was punished for two mistakes and expressed a desire to play more intelligently.
The loss marked Barca’s fifth defeat in 2024/2025, which is comparable to last season’s losses by Flick’s predecessor Xavi Hernandez. Despite this, Laporta remains convinced that the situation will be reversed in January, when titles are at stake.
Flick and his team can reinstall faith in the Barca project by getting past Athletic Club in the semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup and then beating Real Madrid or Mallorca in the final. With a 12-win streak on the pitch, Atletico’s chances of winning the title are also dwindling, giving Flick’s team an opportunity to mount a comeback.
