Florida AG Sues Target Over Diversity Initiatives

Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a federal court lawsuit against Target, claiming the retailer misled investors about the potential risks of its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The suit alleges that Target violated the Securities Exchange Act by failing to disclose “known risks” associated with these efforts.

In his statement, Uthmeier argued that corporations prioritizing DEI over financial returns harm the retirement security of essential workers like teachers and first responders. He vowed to use state laws to champion an “America-first agenda” and challenge what he calls “the left.”

Target’s decision to scrap a program aimed at serving Black employees and shoppers was made after George Floyd’s police killing in 2020. The retailer had launched DEI initiatives in response, but they have faced backlash from conservative activists and the White House.

Other major brands, including Walmart and Starbucks, have also reduced or scrapped their DEI commitments following similar criticism.
