Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced emergency action to prohibit “7-hydroxymitragynine” (7-OH), a synthetic compound derived from the kratom plant, as a Schedule 1 drug. This move comes just weeks after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took similar action.
7-OH is a highly potent opioid, up to 13 times stronger than morphine, and can be found in candy-flavored gummies, shots, and vapes at gas stations and smoke shops across Florida. However, opponents argue that it could provide an alternative for Americans struggling with opioids.
The Holistic Alternative Recovery Trust (HART) cites data showing a 30% drop in opioid overdoses last year, suggesting kratom-derived compounds like 7-OH may have health benefits. Attorney General Uthmeier emphasizes that his office’s focus is on public health emergencies, not the natural Kratom leaf.
The FDA’s action is seen as a response to the growing concern over synthetic opioids. The DEA will now review the decision and consider a final ruling within several months, including a 30-to-60-day public comment period.
