The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a surge in flu activity across the country, with test positivity rates increasing to 5.1% last week. This is up from 3.5% the previous week and shows an uptick in hospitalization rates as well. Outpatient visits for flu-like illnesses are now above the national baseline.
Six states – California, Oregon, Arizona, Louisiana, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. – reported high activity levels, with nearly all flu virus detections being influenza A. Hospitalizations were highest among seniors.
However, the CDC also noted that COVID-19 symptoms are starting to rise from low levels, especially in some parts of the country. Wastewater detections, ED visits, and test positivity rates are increasing, leading the agency to predict an increase in COVID-19 illness in the coming weeks. RSV activity is also on the rise, particularly among young children, with hospitalizations rising in older adults in some areas.
