Flu Cases Soar in Georgia Amid High National Rates

Georgia is experiencing a surge in flu cases, with the state’s rates categorized as “high” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The national trend shows acute respiratory illnesses are on the rise, causing people to seek healthcare.

Experts warn that holiday gatherings will likely lead to more flu cases in the coming days. Georgia is one of 13 states reporting high or very high levels of flu-like illness, which is about double from the previous week.

While there’s no dominant flu strain, the CDC says it’s too early to determine how effective the current season’s vaccine will be. Last year’s season was considered moderate but lasted for 21 weeks and resulted in 28,000 flu-related deaths. Low vaccination rates among children are a contributing factor.

The CDC measures wastewater activity levels and emergency room visits to track COVID-19, flu, and RSV activity. Currently, there is minimal COVID-19 ER visit and wastewater activity, but high flu activity. The CDC also reports a very high level of RSV in wastewater.

Health experts emphasize the importance of vaccination for everyone, especially during holidays when viruses can spread easily.
