Flu Map Sparks Concern as Activity Level Hits Highest Tier

The US is experiencing a surge in flu cases, with 14 states and New York City now at the CDC’s highest tier of influenza activity. The flu positivity rate has jumped from 18% to 25% week-to-week, driven by Influenza A. Pediatric deaths have increased to 31, largely due to the virus’s ability to spread indoors.

Experts attribute the spike in cases to a combination of factors, including waning immunity after COVID-19 and low vaccination coverage. Dr. Matthew Kippenhan notes that complacency may be contributing to the outbreak. Meanwhile, antiviral medications like Tamiflu and Relenza can reduce symptoms and shorten illnesses if taken promptly.

As the flu season worsens, healthcare experts emphasize the importance of vaccination, which can still provide protection even after catching the virus. Getting vaccinated can lead to milder symptoms, reduced hospitalization rates, and less transmission among family members.
