Flu Outbreak Hits North Texas Schools

A flu outbreak is spreading rapidly through schools in North Texas, forcing several districts to close for the week. At least three school districts – Comanche ISD, Godley ISD, and Treetops School International – have shut down due to low attendance rates among students and staff.

According to officials, nearly 650 students from Godley ISD were absent on Tuesday alone, with an additional 60 staff members out sick. This is despite a normal enrollment of 3,200 students in the district.

Other districts, such as Caddo Mills ISD, have reported extremely low attendance rates but remain open. However, they are urging students to wash their hands frequently and stay home if they are sick to prevent further spread.

Pediatric pulmonologist Dr. Preeti Sharma says the flu season is seeing a significant increase in cases, with an 83% rise in Influenza A cases from the week prior. Cook Children’s Hospital is also experiencing a surge in flu cases, with over 900 positive cases reported in its ERs and urgent care offices.

Experts stress the importance of staying healthy during this time. They recommend washing hands frequently, using hand sanitizer, and staying home if symptoms persist or worsen.
