Flu Outbreaks Hit Ohio Schools and Communities

A flu outbreak is causing disruptions in schools across Ohio, with several schools closing due to high staff illness rates. In Clark County, the Clark Shawnee Local Schools district closed on Friday after 25-30 staff members were out sick, leaving only a few teachers and support staff to operate.

Meanwhile, Piqua Catholic School in Miami County reported a 30% student absentee rate over the past three days, with trash services being delayed due to staff shortages. Health officials are warning that the flu is highly contagious and that vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk.

Public health expert Dan Suffoletto advises that paying attention to symptoms and staying home when ill can help prevent the spread of the flu. He also emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated against the flu, which can reduce the severity of illness.

The outbreak is not limited to schools; hospitals in the Miami Valley region are also reporting an increase in flu cases. Suffoletto notes that hospitalizations are above the five-year average and that people with certain underlying health conditions may be at higher risk.

To prevent the spread of the flu, health officials recommend washing your hands frequently with soap and water, especially in public places like shopping centers or theaters.
