Flu Season Claims Dozens of Children’s Lives Nationwide

A severe flu season has hit the US, claiming dozens of children’s lives nationwide. The Carolinas are among the top states in terms of high flu numbers, prompting doctors to warn of a deadly combination between the flu virus and bacterial infections.

According to Dr. Amina Ahmed, Medical Director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, fewer people getting vaccinated is a major contributor to the surge in positive cases and deaths. The number of people vaccinated has decreased from 70-80% pre-pandemic to around 40-50% today.

If children test positive for flu, they are at risk of developing bacterial superinfections, which can lead to pneumonia or sinus problems. Dr. Zack Moore, State Epidemiologist with North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, emphasizes the importance of vaccination in preventing both flu and bacterial infections.

RSV and COVID-19 are also circulating, but experts recommend practicing good hygiene and getting vaccinated as the best way to keep kids healthy during flu season. Both doctors stress that vaccination is key to preventing flu-related complications and saving lives.
