A severe flu season is sweeping the US, with doctors reporting record numbers of patients being hospitalized for influenza. In New Jersey, the state’s influenza activity has reached its highest level since the CDC designation.
According to Dr. Martin Topiel, an infection prevention officer at Virtua Health, emergency rooms are flooded with cases, and many staff members have been out for a week or more due to the flu.
Data analysis shows a second surge of flu cases this season, with New Jersey experiencing the highest level of activity compared to neighboring states like Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Experts emphasize that it’s not too late to get vaccinated against the flu. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are already working on studies to improve next year’s flu vaccine.
“It’s crucial to make these measurements in real-time,” said Dr. Scott Hensley, a professor of microbiology. “We want to understand what’s happening and prepare for the next flu season.”
